Who we are

A non-profit working alongside communities — not for them.

TIEN'HAMMA e.V. was founded in Nuremberg in 2023 by Burkinabé and German friends who refused to accept that geography should decide whether a child gets to learn. From the start we have worked in the Eastern Region of Burkina Faso — across the communes of Piela, Bilanga, Bogandé, and the wider Sirba region — where internal displacement, school closures and economic shock have hit families hardest.

Our approach is unglamorous and effective: we partner with the people already doing the work. Local schools enroll the children we sponsor. Municipal mayors validate the families that need the most support. Burkinabé teachers and community organisers run the programs on the ground. Our role is to fund, coordinate, document, and report — transparently and in detail.

Our mission is to empower and transform the lives of children in Burkina Faso by ensuring they have equal access to quality education — regardless of their background or circumstances.

Since we started, 486 children have been sponsored through their primary and secondary years. Our SOONGDO 200 campaign extends that reach further — we will support 130 children for the 2026/2027 school year, with school fees, uniforms, books, hot meals every school day, and the assurance that funding is committed for three full years per child.

Education is not the only barrier. Our EXIT 10 program offers ten at-risk youth real alternatives to violent extremism through vocational training. In 2025, with our partners SolarBuddy and Xpert Teambuilding, we distributed 3,000 solar lamps so children can study after sunset and households reduce dependence on kerosene. And our newest program, the PureWater Project, deploys filtration backpacks to remote villages of the Sirba Region — so families no longer choose between a long walk and unsafe water.

We are a small team. We are deliberate about which battles we pick and meticulous about how funds are spent — 99% of every euro reaches the field.

Our values

What we stand for.

Four principles guide every decision we make — from which child we sponsor to which partner we work with.

Equality

Equal access to quality education. We work to eliminate the systemic barriers that exclude girls, displaced children, and the rural poor.

Empowerment

Transforming lives through education and vocational skills — equipping youth with the tools to shape their own future.

Collaboration

Real change is built with — not for — communities. We partner with local schools, mayors, donors, and NGOs.

Resilience

Burkina Faso's Eastern Region faces extreme adversity. Our work centers the strength of the people who already live there.

Active campaigns

Two campaigns. One mission.

PureWater Project

Safe drinking water — in a backpack.

In partnership with Xpert Teambuilding, we are tackling clean-water scarcity in rural Burkina Faso. The PureWater Project delivers durable backpacks with an integrated filtration system, putting safe drinking water directly into the hands of families in remote villages.

Pilot systems are already deployed in the Sirba Region of the Eastern Region of Burkina Faso. Field data from the pilot will guide a wider scale-up across the communities we already serve through our education programs.
